Weather
In our country the weather changes in the course of the year. But in some places in the world there are no changes in weather at all. The weather or the climate is the same all the time. It is caused by the longitude- that means the position of the particular place on our planet. The Earth circles round the Sun. It takes one year. Our heat comes from the Sun. At the Equater places get more heat, that´s why it´s hotter there than at the poles. It is rather complicated to explain it. There is connection with the slope of the terrestrial axis and things like that. I remember that we have learnt about it but I can´t remember all these facts. Geography was one of my favourite subjects but I have forgotten almost everything.
There are three main climatic zones on the Earth- the tropical, moderate and the arctic zone. Our republic lies in the mild zone. There are four seasons of the year- spring, summer, autumn and winter. I like all seasons. I think it´s good that there are 4 seasons. The year is not always the same. We can do various activities in each season. For me it would be rather boring if there was the same weather all the year round.
At first I would like to describe the seasons of the year.
SPRING: Begins on 21st March. Nature begins to awake from its long winter sleep. Nights get shorter and days get longer. There is more sunshine and it becomes warmer and warmer. Snow melts. Rivers and ponds swell. There may be floods. It is raining very often. After the rain we can see a rainbow. It is caused by the reflection of the sun´s rays in the falling drops. I have heard that you can find treasures at the end of the rainbow. It really nice to observe it. There´s often slush and mud everywhere.
Vegetation, especially grass grows very quickly, because there´s more sunshine and a lot of rain. Grass is green, you can go to the countryside and enjoy the fresh green colour. Psychologist say it very good to go out of the town. Soon in gardens the first flowers appear: snowdrops, snowflakes, daffodils, dandelions, violets, tulips. My grandmother brings me tulips. I like these flowers very much.
Spring is the symbol of a new life, energy and regeneration. People often fall in love. May is considered to be the month of love. There are some traditions which have been kept for centuries. On the 1st May people kiss under the flowery tree. I don´t know the reason why. In spring we celebrate Easter. I don´t like this festival at all.
Birds such as swallows, starlings and larks come back from the south. They sing their wedding songs, build nests and have babies. Other animals have their babies, too- lambs, foals, chickens, kittens are born.
The weather in April is changable and unpredictable. The temperatures are often below zero at night, but days are often quite warm. Sometimes it is raining, it can be snowing. After a while sun may be shining again. You should take your umbrella with you if you don´t want to get wet.
People set out plants. At first it´s necessary to dig seeding beds, weed, spread manure or fertilizer. I don´t like such activities very much. We had a garden in a garden colony and I had to go there with my mother every week. I really hate having to weed. Sowing is much better. I was looking forward to the time of harvest. I wanted to dig up potatoes with a potato digger, but my mother didn´t let me do it very often. She said, I was too weak to do it. We grew especially vegetables- carrots, potatoes, kohlrabi, peas. We had to sold this piece of land because new houses were later build there. We are going to move soon. We have a house with a big garden in Předměřice. My mother loves planting so she´s looking forward to going there.
Spring tiredness quite well known syndrome. People after long winter don’t have enough vitamins. Our organism just needs some time to become fit. Some people suffer very much, thea may become ill. They get flu or cold. It´s necessary to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables so that you could feel good.
SUMMER: June 21st is the date when summer begins. It is often hot, the temperatures rise up to 30°C. Sometimes it´s so hot, that you don´t want to do anything, just sit down and dring something very cold and have tuns of ice- cream. The heat may be unbearable. It´s really terrible to be at school in June. You can´t even breathe in the classrooms, you can´t open windows because then there would be much hotter. You wish you could be somewhere at the river. You are longing for refreshment and free time very much. Finally holidays come and rescue you. Students have two monts holidays. That´s wonderful time. You can do whatever you want, you have much free time. People go swimming, sunbathing, travel abroad, go to theseaside. You don´t have to be worry abot getting up early in the morning, doing homework and learning. That´s why children are really looking forward to summer very much.
The weather is very sultry and dry. No wind blows, it´s sunny and calm. But suddenly a storm may come. The sky clouds over, it gets dark and the temperature drops a little. You can get to know, that a storm is coming very easily. The wind starts to blow. It changes into a strong wind. Then there´s a crash of thunder and a flash of lightning in the sky. It starts raining very heavily. It may be hailing, too. If you are out, you get wet to the skin immediately. There are some rules or things you shouldn´t do. It´s very dangerous to stand under a tree because the lightning might hit it. I remember that last year there were storms almost every week. Once I went to the Opaťák and suddenly a storm came. I went on a bike so I couldn´t get home immediately. I couldn´t see the way, because of the heavy downpour. When I came home, the storm ended. I was wet and angry.
On the other hand a storm might be wonderful. But only if you are at home or somewhere indoors and dry. I like the sound of the rain falling on the roof. I really love listening to it, After the storm a rainbow may appear, too.
Summer is the time for berries. People can collect strawberries, billberies, raspberries, currant. I like mushrooming, too. I don´t eat mushrooms at all, but I like to pick up them. When I was younger I competed with my brother in picking up. Both of us wanted to find more mushrooms than the latter. Finding the first mushroom was also important. It´s necessary to know mushrooms, because there are edible ones and poisonous ones in forests. You should taky only mushrooms you surely know. I can identify a cep- it has brown shiny cap and big thick stem with no skirt. The most poisonous mushroom is a death cap. You can see white bag at the bottom of the stem, skirt on the stem. It has white greenish cap. You may change it with field mushrooms very easily. Field mushrooms are very popular, My mother says they are delicious. You can get these mushrooms in supermarkets, too. A fly agaric is also known, it´s very poisonous, too. There are white tiny spots on the red cap. It contains drug which causes halucination, blood poisoning and death.
I think that summer is the favourite season of the year. People go on their holidays, enjoy the nice weather. Days are long and you can be out in the evening. It´s very nice to observe the sun setting. It´s very romantic, I think. People enjoy walking, sitting outside with friends. The consumption of beer is very high. Beer is considered to be our national drink. In summer you should drink at least 3 liter of water. I think that some men in our country drink more than 3 litre beer a day. The Czech are insuperable in drinking beer. Our country is first and foremost in drinking and consumption of beer.
People usually eat only light dishes, vegetables and fruits because it is very. You aren´t hungry. Children would eat only ice- cream. In the evening people barbecue. I enjoy sitting at fire very much. I don´t like knackwursts at all, I prefer bread or potatoes. You can put potatoes or apples into ash. It tastes very good. You don´t have to wear thick clothes. T- shirt and shorts are the only things you need. In the evening you might be annoyed by the insects. Mosquitos sting you, so it´s good to use an insect repellent.
I like summer very much. I used to go to children summer camps. It was wonderful. We played a lot of games in forests, went swimming. Every year there was a different topic of our games. I remember that once we were sailors of the Santa Maria, Pinta and Nina. The topic was discovering America. Next year we were looking for the Holly Grail- there was connection to the British history and the legend of the King Arthur. I enjoyed all the games very much. They involved a lot of running, searching and guessing. I was never bored. I have so many wonderful experiences. It impossible to describe all of them. I´m sure I´ll never forget the atmosphere. I only regret that I can´t turn back to my childhood. Time runs so quickly, that´s a pity. I have met a lot of friends there, some of whom I visit so far.
Every year I went with my father and brother camping. That was wonderful, too. We visited castles and interesting places. I think that the period of my childhood was very nice.
AUTUMN: On the 23rd of September autumn comes. At the beginning of September children have to go to school again. The nice wheather breaks although we can still enjoy fine days of Indian summer. It ´s the time of harvest, we pick apples, pears and plums. It´s the time of vintage, too. People gather grapes and produce wine. The sun sets earlier and rises later, so days get shorter and shorter. That´s why leaves turn yellow and red. It´s a wonderful view. I enjoy gouing in the countryside and observe trees. They are colourful. I think that the countryside can bring inspiration for artists, painters, componists. This is the time of the year I really like. Especially when it is overcast a bit and wind is blowing. I don´t know why but itś very nice for me. I can´t describe my feelings I am in the vein for painting or writing.
Children fly kites. It was my favourite activity, too. We made special kites of leaves, too. In autumn the waether is unsettled, the sky is often cloudy,it usually doesn´t clear up by day and it rains a lot. Decidious trees such as maples, beeches, ashes shed their leaves and by the beginning of November they are bare. Grass turns yellow and dry. Mornings are dull, there may be fogs, it looks like rain. It may drizzle, too. Autumn is the season of wet and chilly days. People don´t like such weather at all. Some are depressed, in bad moods, they are tired and without buoyancy. They refer to the weather as awful, nasty and sad. It gets colder and colder, the temperature continues to drop.
WINTER: Comes on December 21st, but it often begins earlier. Typical winter weather brings snowfall, wind and frost. Sometimes the wind piles up snowdrifts along the roads. Children can make snowmen, throw snowballs, they enjoy sledging, skating and skiing. Temperature sometimes drop to 20°C below zero. The roads become icy and slippery.
Weather in Britain is very changable. People never know what tomorrow´s weather will be like. It rains a lot. It´s foggy very often. The climate is milder than other European countries. It is influenced by the Gulf Stream. It brings damp and warmer climate. That is why the pastures and meadows are green all the year round. Cattle and sheep are bred there. Weather is the most popular topic. It´s good to start talking about the weather if you want to take up with somebody.
