-possibilities for tourism
-economical situation, sources of income
I live in The Moravian-Silesian Region which is situated in the north-east of The Czech Republic. It borders with the Olomouc Region in the west and the Zlín Region in the south. It also borders with Poland in the north and Slovakia in the east.
In the west there are the Hrubý Jeseník Mountains. The highest peak of Hrubý Jeseník is Praděd with 1491 meters but Praděd isn´t situated in the Moravian-Silesian Region. The highest peak of the Moravian-Silesian Region is Bald Mountain with 1323 meters. Bald Mountain is in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids. In the east there are The Javorniky Mountains with the highest peak Velký Javorový.
Many rivers run through the region. The most important are The Odra and The Ostravice. On these rivers were built dams. On the Ostravice river was built Šance dam which supplies for example Frýdlant nad Ostravicí with drinking water.
Hukvaldy is the birthplace of Leoš Janáček. You can visit his museum which is in the house where he was born. There is a monument of Bystrouška, from Janáček’s opera. It is said that if you touch its tail your wish will be granted. There are ruins of gothic castle as well. The castle has never been conquered. At present it is popular place for weddings. The castle is surrounded by hunting grounds where are moufflons.
Kopřivnice is famous for its production of cars and ceramics.Tthere is the technical museum where you can meet the history of Tatra cars. In the past there was big factory for production of tableware and stoves. It´s birth place of Emil Zátopek. This year there is exhibition of Merkur. I visited it and it was great. It´s interactive exhibition so you can create something from Merkur. In Kopřivnice there are ruins of castle as well.
Štramberk is next to Kopřivnice. Štramberk has beautiful historical center with typical houses which are strictly protected. Typical local products are Štramberk Ears. These are gingerbreads which has shape of cone. They are baked as a commemoration of victory against the Turks. In Štramberk there is beautiful arboretum. It is popular for its rocks which are ideal for rock-climbing. There is Šipka as well. It´s cave where a mandible of a Neanderthal child was found. Štramberk is attractive for tourist because of Štramberská Trúba. It´s remain of castle from 13th century. At present it´s lookout.
In Mošnov there is the Leoš Janáček´s Airport. It´s not very big airport, but it has very long runway. Due to this there are the NATO days every year. Thousands people come there every year to see shows with planes, helicopters etc.
In Rožnov pod Radhoštěm there is open-air museum where you can find how our ancestors lived. There are beautiful old buildings which are originally equipped. I like it there, but I can´t imagine that I would live there.
In Starý Jíčín there is old ruined castle. I was there only once or twice.
In Příbor Sigmund Freud was born. You can found there the house where he was born. Příbor is really beautiful city with many historical buildings. There is exhibition of Christian arts in building of old Jesuit school.
Frýdek- Místek is quite big city. I have gone to school there. In Frýdek- Místek there is castle where local museum is situated. This city is famous for Sweetsen fest which is taken every year there.
The biggest city of my region is Ostrava which is the third largest city in the Czech Republic as well. In the communist era it was called the steel heart of the republic because of its resources of black coal.
Every year there is famous festival Colours of Ostrava. People from all around the world come there. Few years ago there was ZAZ for example. Last year there was Asaf Avidan or Damian Race. There Silesian Ostrava Castle which was repaired and at present there are cultural actions held.
I love Ostrava because of mines and smelters. I like industrial architecture and these buildings are beautiful in my opinion. I think that these buildings should be strictly protected, because they are typical for this region.
In the communist era it was industrial center of the Czech Republic because of resources of black coal. There were built factories, mines and smelters. We produced high-quality steel which was famous in the world. At present factories and mines go bankrupt due to cheap Polish coal.
In Třinec there are Třinec Iron and Steel Works. They are one of the biggest producers of iron in our country. They are big producer of rails. It gives work to thousands of people, so it´s very important in my opinion.
For our region production of textiles was typical, but all big companies went bankrupt. Great example is Slezan in Frýdek- Místek. Few years ago it went bankrupt and many people lost their jobs.
In Nošovice there are two big companies. These are: Radegast and Hunday. Brewery was built 100 years ago. It produces beer which is very popular in our region, but at present it has problems as well and many people lost their work. Hunday factory was built 3 or 4 years ago. In my opinion it´s good thing.
