Holidays in the CR
New Year
The first January, is celebration of the New Year. It usually starts late night, people drink champagne at the midnight and they have a lot of new year´s resolutions. They usually have dinner including pork for good luck and lentils for prosperity.
Easter (Sunday and Monday)
We celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon. It is a Christian holiday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. People decorate eggs (symbol of new life)
Workers day (Labour Day)
On the 1st May we commemorates workers who organised a strike in Chicago to protest against miserable working conditions. (they worked 10-12 hours a day, six days a week).
Liberation Day
Liberation day celebrates the end of the World War II on May 8, 1945.
St. Cyril and Methodius Day
On this day we remember two priests who brought Christianity to the Slavic people of central Europe. They wrote down the Slavic language.
Jan Hus Day
The 6th July commemorates Jan Hus, a Catholic priest. He was burned at the stake because he criticised the Catholic Church.
Wenceslas Day
This day is celebrated the anniversary of the death of Prince Wenceslas. He was murdered by his own brother.
Czechoslovak Independence Day
Czechoslovak Republic was founded on the 28th October. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk became Czechoslovakia´s first president.
Struggle for Freedom and Democracy day
On the 17th November we commemorate student´s demonstrations against the Nazis in 1939, as well as the protests against the Communists in 1989.
Christmas 24-26 Christmas
Christmas is a Christian holiday, celebrating the birth of Jesus. Celebration spends 3 days. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and St. Stephen´s Day.
