Food and meals. At a restaurant.
Eating and drinking are some of the most important things that influence our health.
The first meal of the day is breakfast. Some say that a rich breakfast is the best way to start the day, others prefer a healthy light breakfast. The majority of people eat bread or rolls with butter, salami, ham, cheese or jam and honey. Many people also cook scrambled eggs, omelettes or polenta. Those who prefer a healthy breakfast might have yoghurt, fresh fruit or muesli with milk. Many people accompany their meal with tea, coffee, hot chocolate or
a glass of juice.
I have breakfast at 7 o´clock at school on weekdays. I usually eat yoghurt, rolls, salami and a sweet. And I drink warm tee.
At weekends I have breakfast at about 9 or 10 o´clock. I like to eat rolls and sausages and I usually drink hot chocolate.
A snack comes after breakfast. On weekdays I have the snack when I have the big break at about 9:45. I always bring a very big snack because I am hungry all the time. I have rolls, salami, processed cheese, fruit or vegetables and some chocolate. I must eat during every break and sometimes during the lessons, too. If I don´t eat regularly, I feel sick and I often faint. So the food is really very important for me.
At weekends I don´t have the snack because I have breakfast at 9 or 10 o´clock and then I have lunch.
At midday, it is lunchtime, usually the time for the main meal in our country. Some people eat lunch in the school canteen, others at home. Lunch consists of soup, a main course and maybe a dessert.
The Czech diet is not very healthy. It is based on meat, especially pork. Our national meal is roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut. Popular dishes also include Wiener schnitzel with potato salad, roast beef with a cream sauce or cabbage soup with sausage. Most meat is served with potatoes or dumplings. Favourite meals are also sweet dishes such as pancakes, jam omelettes or plum dumplings. Czech beer is famous all over the world. Bohemian and Moravian wines are well known as well. The most popular spirit drink is “Slivovice”, a plum brandy, but best of all is the herb-based drink, “Becherovka”.
Cuisine in the United States is not very healthy, too. When most people think of American cuisine, the first meal that comes to mind are hamburgers, chips and Coca-Cola. Different regions in the US have their own unique meals. The best known American meal is fish and chips. The national meal consists of turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, cranberries and pumpkin pie. The favourite American dessert is fruit pie served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The most popular dessert is apple pie.
The English are known for their full breakfasts that include fried bacon and eggs and cup of tea or coffee. Lunch is not the main meal of the day. It is a quick meal such as a sandwich. Dinner is a hot meal that usually includes meat, sauce and cooked green vegetables.
I have lunch at home at about 3 p.m. My favourite food is pork with dumplings and sauerkraut. After lunch I usually eat something sweet and I drink hot chocolate with cinnamon. I also like fruit and vegetable salads a lot.
The last meal of the day is dinner. In many families the menu usually consists of another warm meal, for example dumplings with sauce, pancakes or sausages with mustard. If we have a cold dinner it may be cheese, salami, ham, vegetables and bread.
Very important are drinks. We should drink two or three litres of liquid every day.
If we don´t want to cook at home, we can go to a restaurant. We can choose many meals from the menu. There are cold appetizers, hot appetizers, soups, main courses, side dishes, desserts and beverages in the menu.
When we come to the restaurant, we put off our coats, we sit down, choose a meal and order it. Then we wait and when the meal is ready, a waiter brings it to us. Then we eat it and finally we pay. We can pay together or separately.
