Food, eating habits, cuisines
I think that food is one of the most important things in our lives. We think about food almost every day because, normally, people eat 6 times a day. I’d like to say something about me and food, then something about eating habits in the Czech Republic and finally something about cuisines in the Czech Republic and in the UK.
I don’t think that I’m one of those people, which regularly discuss food and cooking, unhealthy or healthy diets and so. But I have to say, that I have some favourite meals, which I really like- for example pizza, gnocchi with curry sauce or freshwater fish. On the other side, there is so many meals, which I dislike. I don’t think that picky in food (I’m not a fussy-eater), but I can’t eat for example spinach, poppy or cooked corn in risotto.
As for eating habits, I’d mention some special table manners in my country. It’s forbidden to slurp (srkat) your food, smack (mlaskat) your lips or speak with your mouth full. You should leave your napkin on the table and don’t have your elbows on the table. On the other hand, in the USA and Britain they put their napkin on their lap.
Now, I’d like to tell you something about Czech food. Czech people love food. We eat more than the British, however, it is known, that our food is less healthy. Czechs, in general, like fatty meals. Our food should consist of more vegetable, fruit, lean meat and fish. Our typical dish is roast pork, sirloin with cream sauce and dumplings. Also sweets and cakes are typical for Czech cuisine. Should I speak about eating habits, I’d say that they are quite different to British people. Normally, we have breakfast in the early morning and it consists of coffee or tea and something small to eat (bread or roll with jam, cornflakes and so). We have 2 snacks a day, which consists of some fruit or yoghurt. The main meal of all day is lunch at noon, which consists of starter (like soups), main course and something sweet. At 6 or 7 p. m. is time for dinner. It’s common to have a cold dish – bread and rolls with something, but some people prefer something warm.
On the other hand, British usually start at work and at school later, so they have a lot of time to enjoy their breakfast. Typical English breakfast begins with a cup of tea with milk, a dish of bacon and eggs, fried sausages and tomatoes or ham, toast and marmalade. In the middle morning they have just a cup of coffee and biscuits. Their lunch is much smaller than the Czech one. They usually have a sandwich. About 4 o’clock is a teatime, which is a social occasion. They eat sandwiches and they drink several cups of tea with milk. Dinner is the main meal of the day. It’s warm and it’s eaten at 7 or 8 PM. Popular evening meals are pizza, French fries, fish, pasta or soups.
