Culture and entertainment
- What do we call culture?
– culture or art includes products of human activities which enrich people in some way (mainly psychically)
- Why do we need entertainment?
- it is well known thing among the people that we should divide our day into three parts – time to sleep, work and relaxing. It’s obvious that we can’t only work all day. And if so, we are soon become ill or depressed.
- relaxing is closely connected with entertainment. Entertainment is very important for us because:
- without entertainment our lives would be grey – we would be scowling workaholics without any joy from life
- we can be with our friends and family – when we go e.g. to the cinema, theatre or do something what entertains us
- we learn new things, meet new people – when we go e.g. to a museum o to a gallery we can find some interesting facts which we haven’t known before and it’s a great opportunity to meet people which are interested in the same things and to make new friends
- we get energy, we become refreshed – it’s a great chance to escape from our daily routine and visit a theatre or go to a concert
- it enriches us in spiritual way
- What kinds of culture and entertainment do you know?
- our world offers us a great variety of activities which can be in generally called culture and entertainment:
- we can go to the cinema
- plays in the theatre
- opera, ballet, concert of classical music
- TV
- concert
- reading a book, newspapers
- galleries
- sports and other hobbies
- going to a restaurant, going to a ball
- even shopping has now become a culture
- Which do you prefer and why?
- my preferences depend on my mood, on the time I want to spend with it and also on money I have
- if I am not exhausted in the evening, I like reading books because I can use my imagination a lot and also I often learn some interesting things.
- if I am tired after a long day, I just lay in my bed and watch some soap opera on TV. I know it is not a good example of high culture, but I don’t have to think about it and I get relaxed.
- I also like visiting museums, galleries or historical parts of some larger towns because I really love history, art and architecture. While walking I can admire the various style in which were the buildings built.
- on some special occasions like weddings or birthdays we go to some restaurant
- moreover when I have time I like going to the theater but not very often because it turns to be more exhausting than entertaining…
- during the ball season I love going to the balls
- Compare c&e in the past and today
- in the past, people had generally less time to spend with culture and entertainment. Also the options what to do were more limited.
- the most outstanding it was among the lower classes because they had to work very hard.
- during the year there were opportunities to entertain even for the poor people
- important events in the persons life (birth, wedding,…)
- traditional customs during the year – people were celebrating Christmas, Easter and other folk customs, traditions and religion played an important role in their lives
- they didn’t have TV so they read more books, or went to the theatre or just listened to the stories told by old people
- What culture event did you last go to?
– in March I visited a country ball in Kojetín. It was really nice….
- What do you miss in your town?
– according to my opinion, the amount of culture and entertainment in my town is really large. During summer we have so called Music Summer when a lot of bands come to my town to play their music or the feasts which are a part of our tradition. Also exhibitions are regularly organized. More over, every spring we have the annual theatre festival.
