FOOD – CZECH AND ENGLISH CUISINE. MY FAVOURITE MEALS
- People usually have three meals a day: breakfast in the morning, lunch at noon and dinner in the evening – these meals differ according to nationality
- In our country breakfast usually consists of tea or coffee and bread or rolls with cheese or ham. Some people prefer something sweet like cake or doughnuts. A very modern alternative is to have cereals or muesli. There are also some people who do not eat anything for breakfast, because they believe it will help them stay slim.
- English breakfast is quite different. It consists of a glass of fruit juice, cornflakes with sugar and milk and butter crisp pieces of toast with marmalade or jam or honey. Quite a lot of British people eat muesli or some other ready-made cereals or porridge. They drink tea with milk or coffee.
- On the weekend the English have a big cooked breakfast consisting for example of eggs, fried bacon, sausages, beans, tomatoes and toasts
- At noon people have their lunch. In the Czech Republic it is the main meal of the day with soup, a main course usually consisting of some meat, and sometimes deserts. People often eat in restaurants or canteens.
- British lunch is lighter. It is often just a sandwich or salad. Fast food is a typical feature of British and American life styles. These places like McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken offer some solid food like grilled chicken, hamburgers, pizza or desserts and beverages. The oldest types of fast food are places offering fish and chips – it’s very typical for Britain
- Another typical British feature is 5 o’clock tea. The tea is usually fairly strong and served together with some cakes or biscuits
- The evening meal is called dinner. Czech dinner is not so nutritious. It may be some salami, cheese, eggs, bread or rolls and some vegetables. Other people prefer a hot meal for dinner too. They may have pancakes, potato pancakes, pizza or goulash.
- The British warm dinner has three or four courses. It consists of soup, then the main course, which is followed by a desert and finally sometimes cheese and biscuits are served. As a dessert they may have fruit, fruit salad, pudding or ice cream. Supper is a light meal, which the English eat sometimes after the cinema or theatre late at night.
- Traditional Czech cuisine is said to be unhealthy, due to its dumplings, fatty meats and thick sauces. A typical Czech dish is roast pork with cabbage and dumplings. Very popular are also sweet dishes like dumplings stuffed with plums, or pancakes. But many people, especially the young, now follow modern trends and eat more vegetables and fish or chicken meat.
- The traditional perception of British cuisine is of overcooked vegetables, tasteless meat and a lot of potatoes. But they also have good things like roast beef or roast turkey and lots of seafood. In general, British cuisine is healthier than Czech.
- Nowadays it is very modern to be a vegetarian, which means not to eat any meat. Some vegetarians even deny eggs, milk or milks products, but I am not sure if this is really healthy.
