“Cancer Czar”
A “Cancer Czar” has been appointed to run government policy and cut the number of deaths from the disease. Professor Mike Richards says his top priority will be to hire new staff. He said that the staff issue is the one we are going to be tackle first. He will be calling together various representatives of the different branches of the medical profession and the nursing profession and radiographers so that they could identify where the greatest needs are and plug the gaps.
Cancer priorities: – extra specialist staff
- faster access to the best drugs, no matter where in the UK you live
- priority treatment for the most urgent cases
- clearer information of patients
Lagging behind
It is a first time a senior doctor has been appointed to run a major area of health policy. The government says he is needed because Britain’s cancer survival rates lag behind much of Western Europe.
Professor Richards said that the government had promised him additional funding to meet his cancer targets. He said that he had been assured by ministers that these will be more money available for his whole programme. “What money is mainly needed for is more staff and equally for new drugs.”
